Grass Wood

We walked yesterday from Grassington to Grass Wood and back. Autumn colours were our main reason for choosing this walk. The beech trees did not disappoint us though we were too late in the season for other trees which have shed their leaves already. There is a special atmosphere of calm and quiet in Grass Wood which in places looks like a mythical fairy dell.
The ancient first-century fort of the Brigantes nation, raised up in their futile resistance to the Roman imperial invaders, adds to the mystique of the wood.
To reach the wood we took the riverbank path from the roadbridge over the Wharfe between Threshfield and Grassington, having parked in the National Park Centre car park in Grassington. We returned by leaving the wood at Park Stile and following the public footpath across fields and along a walled lane which returns you to the top of Grassington high street.
Unfortunately the confined nature of this footpath meant it had become very muddy with several deep puddles and little room for maneouvre. We wished we'd returned the way we'd come!
