A walk in Chapel-le-Dale

We took the Carlisle train from Skipton station as far as Ribblehead. From the station and under the viaduct there is a gentle walk to Chapel-le-Dale with its rustic little church. The Hill Inn, on the main road, is the nearest pub about 500 metres before the village (if it is open - we found it closed on the Tuesday after a bank holiday Monday apparently to compensate for being open on the bank holiday). The photographlink shows an interesting gravestone for former landlord and landlady of the Hill Inn who appear to have died on the same day in 1928! There is a moderately steep climb away around the back of the churchyard past Hurtle Pot and up to Ellerbeck. This affords wonderful views of the Dale with Ingleborough towering over it all; and on the horizon to the east the Ribblehead viaduct towards which a gently descending path across pastures leads you back. Full details of this walk are to be found in the cottage in the Book Yorkshire Dales Walks (Jarrold Pathfinder Guide) p45 Walk 15.
