The fabulous Holehird Gardens

We drove to Windermere yesterday and discovered the fabulous Holehird Gardens. This is the base of the Lakeland Horticultural Society. There are ten acres of hillside gardens with stunning views of the lake and the fells behind including Langdale Pikes. The gardens hold the national collection of Astilbes,Hydrangeas and Polystichum ferns. What is unique about it among such gardens in England is that it is maintained entirely by the membership of the society and financed by voluntary donations. Entrance is free to the public and it is open 365 days of the year.
